After the purchase, IMA continued to work with the Society, providing
design, construction documents, and construction administration services
related to the building’s renovation and life-safety, seismic, and
accessibility upgrades. Jack Kemp and Ian Mackinlay designed a phased
project that expanded the existing office and archive space, updated the
mechanical and electrical systems and exterior façades, and prepared
the building for the future build-out of the ground-floor museum. This
approach realized maximum value from the Society’s $4.7 million
and allowed for expansion over time as the Society raised additional funds.
Result
IMA’s services helped the Society get $1 million more than the
city’s original offer for its Civic Center property, find a larger,
well-located building whose renovation costs wouldn’t surpass
the budget, and maximize the new building’s space and usability.
