TerminaLink, High-Speed Automated People Mover
George Bush Intercontinental Airport
Houston, Texas

SPA was retained by Continental Airlines to provide design management services for Continental
Airline’s nearly $100 million design and construction expansion program at Bush Intercontinental
Airport. The key feature of the Continental expansion included a $58 million automated people
mover called TerminaLink. SPA’s responsibilities included providing overall design management
for the TerminaLink, as well as contract documents and administration for the two elevated
stations.  TerminaLink, the automated people mover known for its speed promotes the 30-minute
connect time requirement between the remote gates of the renovated Terminal C and B. The
people mover is designed to accommodate service to other terminals in the future.

A unique design-build, fast track project approach was used to develop the TerminaLink in a 30-
month design and construction schedule. The TerminaLink station design was a collaboration of
the airport system, the transportation consultant, the client, Continental Airlines.  SPA’s
coordination efforts and system of project monitoring and quality control ensured a successful
integration of facilities and transportation technology.  Project budgets and schedules were
constantly monitored, and changes were recommended for compliance to the established master
plan. As result of SPA’s aggressive quality assurance and constructability reviews, the
TerminaLink station construction bids were within two percent of the project budget, and
construction was completed within the project schedule.
