St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, a landmark within the prestigious River Oaks
neighborhood was an intriguing assignment for Spencer Partnership Architects. The original
architecture reflected the linear influence of Frank Lloyd Wright, reinforced through heavy
beams and natural Austin limestone. The challenge of the renovation and addition at St. John’s
was making the new construction complement the old and to make the entire complex read as
one established, purposeful and peaceful campus.
SPA succeeded in combining a modern and functional interior program with the traditional
architecture. Multi-purpose educational and activity spaces, with high-traffic and acoustical
requirements of hospitality projects, today strike a careful blend of residential comfort,
commercial efficiency and the serenity to a place of worship.
