Terminal A & B Expansion and Renovation
Bush Intercontinental Airport
Houston, Texas

With increases in their international and domestic markets Continental Airlines determined the
need to expand their facilities and operations at Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston.  In 1995
SPA was retained to provide design management and architectural service for Continental
Airlines’ $42 million Terminal Expansion Program.

Through changes in the airline industry, Bush Intercontinental Terminals A & B had become
under utilized while Terminals C and IAB were nearing capacity.  The early scope of the
expansion program included the relocation of OAL’s (other airlines) from Terminal B to Terminal
A, this provided Continental Airlines access to over 20 gates in Terminal B which were renovated,
expanded and occupied in the fall of 1997 through the summer of 1999.

SPA provided design and contract documents along with construction administration for the entire
project which included ticket counters, gate hold rooms, baggage systems, passengers boarding
bridges, aircraft apron layouts add FAA security provisions.

The scope of work included managing a team of specialized consultants and coordinating Project
approvals from public agencies including the City of Houston, Houston Airport Systems and the
Federal Aviation Administration.

The expansion project provides Continental Airlines with additional counters and gates to handle
forecast traffic into the next decade.
